Demosthenes, the son of Demosthenes of Paeania in Attica, a rich and highly respected factory-owner, was born in or about the year B.C. He was early left an orphan; his guardians mismanaged his property for their own advantage; and although, soon after coming of age inhe took proceedings against them and was victorious in the law-courts, he appears to have recovered comparatively.

Demosthenes was already 30 when, inhe made his first major speech before the Assembly. The speech, “ On the Navy Boards,” was a marked success.

The Assembly or Ecclesia (Ekklēsia), a legislative body composed of all adult male Athenian citizens, had convened to consider a rumoured threat against Athens by the King of Persia.

Demosthenes’ tightly reasoned oration helped persuade. W. E. Thompson provides a useful commentary on [Demosthenes] 43 and Isaeus 11 in De Hagniae Hereditate (Leiden ), but he does not supply a Greek text.
